On the Origin of Episodic Accretion in Dwarf Novae

چکیده

We show that dwarf nova disks in quiescence have rather low magnetic Reynolds number, of order 10. Numerical simulations of magnetized accretion disks suggest that under these conditions magnetohydrodynamic turbulence and the associated angular momentum transport is sharply reduced. This could be the physical origin of episodic accretion in dwarf nova disks. If so, the standard disk instability model needs to be revised. Subject headings: accretion, accretion disks — MHD — turbulence — novae, cataclysmic variables

X-ray Observations of the Boundary Layer in Dwarf Novae at Low Accretion Rates

We present a spectral analysis of XMM-Newton data of ten dwarf novae, nine of which were observed during a quiescent state. The X-ray spectra indicate the presence of a hot, optically thin plasma with a temperature distribution consistent with a simple, isobaric cooling flow. The likely origin of the X-ray emission is cooling plasma in the boundary layer settling onto the white dwarf. Using a c...

Recurrent Novae , Classical Novae , Symbiotic Novae , and Population II

Light curve analysis of decay phase of nova outburst are summarized. Nova duration is determined by the strong wind mass-loss which depends only on the white dwarf mass. Fast novae correspond very massive white dwarfs and very slow novae correspond almost lower mass limit of white dwarfs. This relation is shown in both of classical novae and recurrent novae. Light curves are theoretically repro...

Late Superhumps in WZ Sge-Type Dwarf Novae

We report on the detection of very stable modulations with periods unexpectedly (∼0.5 %) longer than superhump periods during the slowly fading stage of WZ Sge-type superoutbursts in three systems, GW Lib, V455 And and WZ Sge. These periods are naturally explained by assuming that these modulations are superhumps arising from matter near the tidal truncation radius. This finding provides an add...

The behaviour of quiescent accretion discs in dwarf novae

We propose a simple explanation for the constant mean brightness observed between outbursts in dwarf novae. Secular changes in the total energy dissipation rate of the accretion disc brought about by variations in surface density, temperature and disc radius can be regulated by the gradual cooling of a small, critically-stable hot inner region. The hypothesis is supported with two-dimensional t...

Hot Accretion onto White Dwarfs in Quiescent Dwarf Novae

We present dynamically consistent solutions for hot accretion onto unmagnetized, rotating white dwarfs (WDs) in five quiescent dwarf novae. The measured WD rotation rates (and other system parameters) in RX And, SS Cyg, U Gem, VW Hyi and WZ Sge imply spindown of the WD by an extended hot flow emitting most of its X-rays in the vicinity of the stellar surface. In general, energy advection is abs...
